The daylong meeting is traditionally held on Boxing Day (26 December) each year and has been running since 1951. The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc) hosted its first internationally rally in 1965. The 6th International Haast Rally wended its way through the newly opened Haast Pass Highway on the South Island's picturesque West Coast. The rally's great success trail blazed seven more internationals between 1972 and 2006.
The international world of vintage and veteran vehicles will become a smaller sphere when they gather in New Zealand's North Island city of Wanganui in January 2012 for another chapter to be woven into the colorful fabric of the banner we will have carried for 66 years.

The Rivercity Caboodle is set to be Wanganui’s largest ever street carnival with a heritage theme. Wanganui’s CBD and Victoria Avenue have long been noted for their heritage features that include Edwardian, Victorian and Art Deco period architecture. Along with this, Wanganui as a settlement has a long and chequered history both pre and post colonisation. It is these ever present reminders of our past that the Caboodle is set to celebrate.
A street carnival in such a unique setting has attracted a lot of local and out of town musicians all keen to participate. Some of the highlights of the day-long entertainment programme will be:
- The Roseneath Centennial Ragtime Band – fast gaining popularity for their devotion to 1930’s New Orleans Ragtime
- The 50 Grand – a high energy trio committed to breathing new life into early rock ‘n’ roll tunes
and
- an outdoor screening of the cinema classic Casablanca.
The Caboodle takes place on Saturday 21st January 2012, beginning at 10am and concluding at midnight. Entertainment will be spread over four stages and there is something for everyone with games, a magic show and stage competitions for the kids along with opera, poetry, debates and theatrical performances for adults. *For the full programme of entertainment please visit www.mainstreetwanganui.co.nz*
Attendees are encouraged to dress according to their favourite historical era and spot prizes will be awarded to the best dressed.
The event takes place throughout Wanganui’s CBD and is part of the Wanganui Festival Weekend.

WHAT IS RELAY FOR LIFE?
Relay For Life is a magnificent, fun-filled overnight event that brings tens of thousands of New Zealanders together every year to:
- Celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer;
- Bask in the the strength of survivors whose life stories inspire others to continue the fight;
- Remember loved ones lost to the disease.
At Relay For Life, people who walk alongside those battling cancer can grieve and find healing. Fight Back. We Relay because we have been touched by cancer and desperately want to put an end to the disease. We make a commitment to save lives by taking up the fight.
How it works
People from all ages and walks of life put
together teams of friends, families, colleagues, sports or community
groups and take on the challenge of raising FUNds, raise awareness and
celebrate survivorship. Gathering together at the overnight Relay For Life event at Wanganui City College, February 25th/26th 2012, they run the Relay to Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back, supporting the individuals and members of our community who are dealing with cancer. Relay For Life highlights are the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the Survivors Walk, and the Candle Light Ceremony.
What’s all the FUNdraising about?
The Cancer Society of
New Zealand is a non-goverment organisation (NGO) funded through the
generosity of individuals and businesses. Funds raised at Relay For Life
help the Cancer Society continue its extraordinary work making sure
cancer survivors get access to free services, information and support
from the moment of diagnosis right through to treatment and recovery.
Business sponsorship at Relay For Life helps to cover the cost
of staging the event, so that more of the funds raised can go towards
research and programmes that support cancer prevention, detection and
treatment and support and information. The Wanganui-Rangitikei-Waimarino
Cancer Society would like to thank it’s Major Sponsors – Wanganui Chronicle, 92.8 More FM Wanganui, Guthrie Holden & Kia, Display Associates and Wanganui City College.
